    16. Exam Time.(Stress Free!)

It’s that time of year again, the weather improves as the nose needs to hit the books, a time of frenzied studying, stress, anxirty and sleepless nights. The exam timetable can seem like a marathon for students (and parents), it may help to treat the whole process like a sporting event.

    FOOD FOR SUCCESS.

Athletes need high intakes of carbohydrates to boost stamina and staying power. Oily fish will help to boost brain power. Fish oil is rich in EPA, a fatty acid that helps the brain send messages between cells and can improve memory, mood, concentration and behaviour. Stress hormones use up a lot of vitamin C, magnesium and zinc, so foods rich in these may be beneficial, such as popcorn, strawberries, sweetcorn and raisins. Other ‘brain foods’ include banana’s ,fish, spinach, blueberries, wholegrains and the ‘brain herb’ ginkgo biloba ( this can be bought in tablet form)  Whilst preparing for  exams you’re perceived as being in a delicate condition. Take  full advantage of this !! ask your parents for your favourite food and treats!! You need treats to keep you going in between  plant and animal cells and ‘an Inspector calls’.

    GET MORE SLEEP

You need plenty of sleep to work fast and concentrate. Research has shown that fatigue can play a key part in failure to perform well in the exam room, it is recommended that a teenager needs between eight-and-a-half and nine-and-a-quarter hours. In order to get this, experts from the Stressbusting website recommend taking all distractions out of the bedroom, such as televisions and computer games, and ensuring that the central heating is not turned up too high. Hot, milky drinks can help
So get the sleep you need, not over your books though!! ,and remember late night studying or cramming will not reinforce the mass of facts accumulated that you have at your beck and call ,and the  next morning you’ll  be fighting  your exam in a bleary eyed fog.

    TAKE SOME EXERCISE

Stressed-out students can often feel that time away from their books is an opportunity lost. But research has shown that exercise can boost the body’s ability to cope with the rigours of exam time and improve concentration. Even a short walk can help.. A study by scientists at the University of Exeter found that students who exercise three or four times a week got higher than average exam grades and that the effect was particularly strong among boys.

Scientists also believe that aerobic workouts improve mental ability because the exercise pumps more oxygen to the brain. Exercise can also promote the growth of new brain cells, with the most marked effect in the hippocampus area linked to memory and learning.

    MAKE STRESS WORK FOR YOU

Stress – in moderation – is not necessarily a bad thing during the exam season. A small amount of stress is necessary for the body to be able to cope, it can raise energy levels. Without pressure it is easy to become bored, pressure does bring focus.

When stress occurs, the body releases extra amounts of the hormones adrenaline and cortisol into the bloodstream. Adrenaline triggers an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, resulting in higher levels of blood flowing to the brain and improving mental alertness. Levels of blood sugar and fats also increase, boosting the body’s energy. However, added to stress being detrimental to grades, the increased cortisol levels can weaken the immune system and lower resistance to disease. Too much stress can cause the system to overload, so a balance must be met.

    THINK POSITIVE

It’s important to have a positive approach in life, this may help to boost performance in exams.  Think how you have improved in your subject, think of positives outcomes, Research has shown that laughter can increase oxygen to the brain cells, stimulate the immune system and trigger positive thinking.

    HAVE A BREAK.

At least 10 minutes every hour. And don’t do more than three hours at a time; the brain can’t take it. Planning time is important ,how many hours of revision do you intend to do? – six hours a day for 10 days – and then allocate how many of those 60 hours you’re going to give each subject .

    Remember to breathe
it is essential for the exam candidate to sit down and take a few deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth. Imagine you’re inhaling knowledge and expelling doubt. Then pick up your pen and do yourself proud.

    TIPS

    • Plenty of sleep the night before
    • Eat something sensible before your exam, this will keep your energy levels high.
    • Avoid ‘panic talk’ with other students
    • Read question carefully, underline key words.
    • Make a time management plan and stick to it
    • Watch the clock
    • Start with the easy ones, the more difficult ones can deplete confidence if done first.
    • Build in revision time, keep a plan.

Don’t leave the exam early, use every second you are entitled to.

    STEP OUT OF THE BOX…..

Step out of the box (home) or away from the box(Tv, technology)….the lighter nights and warmer weather will make this easier

Research has shown that spending time in a natural environment is beneficial to our mental health. Natural stimuli increases the recovery time for stress, find beauty in nature everyday to keep stress at bay.  When we are in natural environments we tend to feel connected and have purpose. We tend to be more positive and creative with our thoughts.

Outside we will tend to talk more, we are getting exercise and the fresh air will clear our minds and help us to focus.

“Nature is fuel for the soul ” says Richard Ryan, lead author and a professor of psychology at the University of Rochester. “Often when we feel depleted we reach for a cup of coffee, but research suggests a better way to get energized is to connect with nature.”

    • ·         Step away from technology, reduce your dependence on technology …have an appointment for nature.
    • ·         Exercise and get outside with gardening.
    • ·         Get a pet.
    • ·         Go for a walk.
    • ·         Try cycling.

  3. 14. Life is motion…Keep moving.

Comments Off on 14. Life is motion…Keep moving.

    Life is motion….keep moving.

As humans, we are designed to move. We’ve become a sedentary generation, having adapted this way because we sit at desks, in vehicles, in front of a televisions or at computer screens. Our children play with xbox, playstation and ipads!. We have become too lazy to walk into town! in a car park we tend to look for the closest space available! TV or Tennis? Walk or drive? Game on the Ipad or out for football? Etc etc. Even the weather can be an excuse, it’s too hot, it’s too cold!

If you let muscles and joints stop moving, over time the body loses the ability to move and specifically, if you are not using a certain muscle because you are in a sustained sitting posture all day, your body will shut that muscle down.  This can lead to neck pain, back pain, headaches, and repetitive strain injuries.

Some tips to add movement into your everyday life:

    • 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week will be enough…..and that doesn’t have to be done all at once.
    • Doing 3 ,10 minute bursts of activity a day will make a BIG difference in your health and your weight.
    • Walk up or down the stairs instead of taking the lift.
    • Park at the back of the car park at Tesco’s!
    • While working at your computer/desk, get up every 30 minutes and and move for 2 minutes .
    • Move while you are on the phone.
    • Sit on an exercise ball while in front of the TV, it will keep your core musculature active and is much better than sitting still on a chair
    • Get a pedometer and measure how many steps you take in a day.  You should aim for 10 000 per day .

We all need to make a conscious effort to spend more time on our feet moving as we were designed.

Look for opportunities where you can be active. This ‘movement’, should it be walking, cycling, tennis, whatever you enjoy, will become a habit, an addiction that will not only improve your health physically but also mentally, life will feel better, weight will be lost, body toned, you’ll be looking good. Being outside, appreciating the countryside or doing some gardening, walking on the beach will also have a therapeutic benefit. So, what are you waiting for? GET MOVING!

Move our way! Beauty Haven can add colour to your toes with a luxury pedicure, in preparation for your summer walks, wax your legs so you can go swimming or maybe a hot stone massage, just as a reward for ‘being active ‘.

    13.Restoration.

Life is busy and can be stressful, we need time alone to recharge and restore our body and mind.

Time to yourself will make life a little bit more enjoyable, reducing the risk of tiredness, frustration and stress we can’t cope with.

    12.HOBBY TIME

Don’t be a fool and say you are too busy for a hobby. Find the time, those moments can change your mood and mind set.

Hobbies aren’t a waste of time, a hobby could be anything as long as it gives you pleasure in doing it. Having a hobby gives you self-esteem, satisfaction, a sense of achievement as well as a sense of personal growth. It has been proven that a hobby can improve memory , alleviate the effects of aging, reduce stress and give you ‘me time’…..so why wouldn’t you?

When people do things that they want to do rather than have to do, like a hobby, it activates an area of the brain called the nucleus accumbens this controls how we feel about life. Hobbies can enhance your creativity, help you think more clearly and sharpen your focus

When you’re really engaged in a hobby you love, you lose your sense of time and enter what’s called a flow state, this restores your mind and energy. Being in this heightened state of concentration chemicals such as endorphins are released, these keep you focused and interested in what you’re doing and that energizes you. Enjoyable activities also stimulate the parts of the brain associated with creative and positive thinking. You become emotionally and intellectually more motivated.

Be a kid again, and enjoy,,,,, art, candle making, photography, dance, cycling, tennis, horse riding, yoga, cooking, chess, skydiving! Or many more…including regular pamper sessions at Beauty Haven.  A hobby will reduce stress, to chill out totally add a hot stone back massage to your ‘me’ time, or try something new such as an acid peel or some reflexology.

Remember, you don’t need to be good at your hobby, just enjoy it and reap the benefits…… Makes sense!

  6. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

    Don’t forget the sunscreen!

If it’s a healthy glow of pink or beautiful bronze your skin is damaged.

Too much sun exposure will increase your risk of skin cancer and premature ageing, both caused by ultraviolet A (long wave) and B (short wave) radiation. UVA rays penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, causing our skin to age more quickly, the UVB rays are associated with sunburn and cancers. It doesn’t take you to be a life long sun worshipper, even an individual with a couple of bad sun burns are all at risk of skin cancer.

It is unfortunate that most of us only take note of this when it is too late, wrinkles appear or skin cancer is diagnosed.

A simple way to avoid this is to wear a sunscreen from an early age, even though the most significant UVB rays are during the summer months they can burn and damage the skin all year round.

UVA rays are present all year round with relatively equal intensity during all daylight hours, throughout the year and can penetrate clouds and glass.

SPF (sun protection factor) This is not the amount of protection, but rather how long it will take for the rays to cause redness…an SPF of 15 will take 15 times longer to redden the skin than without a sunscreen. SPF 15 screens 93% of the sun’s rays, SPF 30 screens 97%.

Call Beauty Haven and have your skin scanned, this service allows the therapist to see what damage has been done to the deeper areas of the skin and what the best treatment would be .

If your skin has been damaged try the photo rejuvenation facial at beauty haven, this evens out pigmentation and can get rid of sun spots.

Acid peels will also help to lighten pigmentation.

Dermalogica do a range of sun products, one of our favourites being the solar defence booster, this has an SPF of 50. Dynamic skin recovery has SPF 30, Total Eye Care SPF 15 and the tinted moisturisers SPF15.SolarDefenseBooster SPF 50DynamicSkinRecoveryTotalEyeCareSheerTint

So there is no excuse, it’s simple and effective…..use a sunscreen!
