Dermalogica have taken the latest findings in scientific research and created the amazing new Ultra Calming Range, one of the most advanced Sensitised Skin system available.
The most common cause of irritation, flushing and stinging is inflammation. This combined with the loss of the skin’s protective barrier means your skin’s health is compromised and can be in a highly reactive state.
The Ultra Calming Complex is clinically proven to control multiple inflammatory reactions leading to sensitised skin whilst restoring the skin’s protective barrier.
Causes of sensitised skin
Immunogenic Inflammation
This is triggered by the immune system caused by foreign substances such as pollen or artificial fragrances.
Neurogenic Inflammation
Triggered by the nervous system, sensitised or inflamed skin may be the result of the environment, chemicals or physical and emotional stress.
Loss of Protective Barrier
Excess exfoliation, exposure to soap and water, even psychological stress can compromise the skin’s protective barrier, lowering your ability to tolerate stressors resulting in sensitised skin and irritation.
A soothing, hydrating mist that quickly relieves sensitivity while helping to calm redness, stinging and aggravated skin. Contains no artificial fragrance or colour.
A powerful, ultra-calming treatment masque enriched with Colloidal Oatmeal to soothe enraged skin and provide lasting relief from sensitized skin flare-ups, redness and rosacea.
The antidote for skin sensitivity: a super-concentrated serum that helps calm, restore and defend sensitized skin. Contains no artificial fragrance or colour.
This unique anhydrous (waterless) moisturiser melts gently into skin to help shield against environmental and internal triggers that cause skin stress.
Recommended for sensitised, reactive and recently resurfaced skin. This extremely gentle, PH-balanced gel/cream glides easily over face and eyes to cleanse without stripping skin’s protective barrier.
Help!! …..taut skin and mild flaking! OR has it developed into red patches which itch and possibly crack and bleed? Once your skin is cracking, this can open the way for bacteria to sneak in and cause infection.
Skin has its own natural elasticity enabling it to stretch and move as you do, but dryness will reduce this and lead to other skin problems such as wrinkles and stretch marks.
Dry skin can be a sign of a skin condition or disease, but usually is caused by harsh soaps, misusing moisturiser, and long, hot showers. Usually, something in the environment – or something you’re doing to your skin – is stripping away the fatty oils that should be on the surface of your skin, leaving it unprotected.
The flakes of skin can look grey, or “ashy, which can give your skin a dirty appearance. If untreated, dry skin can sometimes lead to dermatitis – inflammation of the skin – swelling, and infection. With careful dry skin care, you can usually solve the problem.
Moisturisers are usually our first ‘port of call’, however, we often apply (incorrectly!)straight onto the dry skin, A moisturiser needs to be applied to skin whilst it is still damp, this way, the moisturiser is trapping the moisture on your skin. You’ve also got to get the right type of moisturiser. Experts recommend that people with dry skin get mild moisturisers that contain no perfumes or alcohols.
Dry air is another cause of dry skin, especially during the winter, drawing the moisture right out of the skin. While cold, harsh weather does dry your skin, dry air inside from central heating is a real enemy too!!To counteract the dry heat, again you will need a great moisturiser, you could also use a humidifier. Covering up as much as possible when you’re outside is also helpful. It isn’t just winter weather which can play havoc for those prone to dry skin!! sun exposure can also be very drying, so it is important to protect yourself and use products with spf.
Prolonged exposure to water ,especially hot water , can wash away the natural oils that protect your skin. If you get out of the bath or shower and your skin feels tight, it’s dried out, always apply a good hydrating body cream. Dermatologists advise, limiting showers to a few minutes and use luke warm water rather than hot..
Usually the only parts of the body that need any soap or gel are the face, hands, feet, groin and underarms, the rest of the body can usually just be rinsed off with water. Many of us choose unwisely when soap shopping! going for harsh soaps, such as deodorant or antibacterial soaps, the lathering from soap removes the oils from the surface of the skin and dries it out. For dry skin care, look for milder, “fragrance-free” soaps or better still a mild cleanser.
Whilst dry skin is commonly caused by external factors. , it can sometimes be a sign of a something going on internally, whether it’s a natural physiological change or an illness.
Dry skin often develops when people get older, especially in women. Changes in hormone levels can cause dry skin as we age,
A number of medical conditions can result in dry skin, such as;
Skin conditions, like eczema and psoriasis.
Diabetes. Fluctuations in glucose levels can lead to dehydration, and that dries the skin out.
Hypothyroidism. Low levels of thyroid hormone can reduce the amount of oil produced by your skin.
Malnutrition. Not getting the nutrients you need can leave your skin dried out.
If you are finding you simply can’t get rid of dry skin, it may be wise to see a Doctor to rule anything more sinister out.

19. Skin Reactions. Part 3.
Keratosis pilaris. ( chicken skin! Usually appears on top of arms or legs)
keratosis pilaris looks unpleasant,It becomes especially annoying in the summer months, when we want to show more of our arms and legs. This condition creates havoc with the skin’s surface as a raised, rough, bumpy texture forms, it looks as if you are covered in permanent goose pimples.
It is quite noticeable and inflammation of the hair follicle causes these embarrassing pinpoint red or brown dots on the skin,( but it is medically harmless). It’s caused because excess skin cells build up around individual hair follicles. Sometimes, a hair is unable to reach the surface and becomes trapped beneath the debris, this ingrows and aggravates the bump that is already present.
Treatment is all about smoothing away the bump and improving skin texture, treatment for keratosis pilaris is ongoing –, maintenance being the best way to maintain the smooth skin.
At Beauty Haven, we stock an excellent ‘Body Hydrating Cream’byDermalogica, which is excellent for treating ‘KP’. This product contains hydroxy acids from sugar cane and apple, combined with lactic acid, this really smooths the skin and also relieves dryness. The anti inflammatory properties of green tea, lavender, tea tree and chamomile oils also soothe and soften the skin.

Part 2. Rosacea.
Rosacea is a common but poorly understood long-term skin condition that mainly affects the face.
Symptoms.
· Flushing of the skin
burning and stinging sensations
permanent redness
spots
small blood vessels in the skin becoming visible
Possible ‘triggers’ of rocasea.
exposure to sunlight
stress
exercise
cold weather
heat
the menopause
certain medications
hot drinks
alcohol and caffeine
eating certain foods, especially spicy foods
There is no long term cure for rosacea, but treatments are available to control the symptoms. AtBeauty Haven, we have found photo rejuvenationfacials , using the ellipse I2PL, really improve symptoms such as telangiectasia (red veins) and erythema.(redness).
A thread vein is a small blood vessel near the surface of the skin. The Ellipse operator guides the visible light from the flash-lamp to the blood vessels needing treatment. The Ellipse I2PL system carefully filters this light in two ways to ensure that only light with the correct wavelengths is allowed to reach your skin. Blood contains haemoglobin, this absorbs the light and converts it into heat. This heat destroys the protein in the wall of the thread vein. As a result the veins will gradually, and safely, disappear after treatment. Diffused redness and uneven pigmentation are treated in the same way.
The number of treatments depends on the severity of the thread vein. Clinical studies have confirmed that 1-4 treatments usually are needed, and these are timed about one month apart.
Our skin can react quickly to changes in our lives such as pregnancy, illness, tiredness, hormonal changes, menopause and more. Eyes can give many secrets away too, looking heavy, red and simply losing their sparkle.!!
Conditions occurring such as psoriasis, dandruff, eczema, acne, rosacea and hives can cause us endless trouble, so we need to nurture each condion as it comes along.
Part 1. Looking at adult acne.
The appearance of spots, whiteheads and blackheads – can be fuelled by stress due to an increased surge of hormones that kick in to help us cope with the stressful task in hand.
Today there is a much higher incidence of adult acne in women with high pressured jobs, and busy lives,
Mild to moderate cases are usually prescribed topical retinoids and sometimes antibiotics from your GP.
Acne can rob you of a huge part of your life ,whilst being a physical condition the psychological impact destroys confidence and relationships and can dramatically change your way of living.
The skin has thousands of tiny hair follicles each containing a sebaceous gland – producing sebum. A reaction of the gland to the hormone testosterone causes an overproduction of sebum and together with dead skin cells blocks the follicle, causing a blackhead. If the grease and bacteria can’t escape whiteheads and cysts with sebum and pus form. Usual causes of adult acne are hormonal and faulty closing of the hair duct.
It is vital to keep the skin clean, removing excess grease with a good cleansing regime. Skin peeling has proven successful as the peeling action reduces inflammation and unblocks pores.
The meaning TO PEEL – Application of substances of an acid nature to evoke a reaction to stimulate the natural healing process. This will replace and renovate deteriorated skin for a newer, younger and more revitalised one.
At Beauty Haven we have an exciting treatment aimed for skin conditions such as acneic skin.
