19. Skin Reactions. Part 3.

Keratosis pilaris. ( chicken skin! Usually appears on top of arms or legs)

keratosis pilaris looks unpleasant,It becomes especially annoying in the summer months, when we want to show more of our arms and legs. This condition creates havoc with the skin’s surface as a raised, rough, bumpy texture forms, it looks as if you are covered in permanent goose pimples.

It is quite noticeable and inflammation of the hair follicle causes these embarrassing pinpoint red or brown dots on the skin,( but it is medically harmless). It’s caused because excess skin cells build up around individual hair follicles. Sometimes, a hair is unable to reach the surface and becomes trapped beneath the debris, this ingrows and aggravates the bump that is already present.

Treatment is all about smoothing away the bump and improving skin texture, treatment for keratosis pilaris is ongoing –, maintenance being the best way to maintain the smooth skin.

At Beauty Haven, we stock an excellent ‘Body Hydrating Cream’ by Dermalogica, which is excellent for treating ‘KP’. This product contains hydroxy acids from sugar cane and apple, combined with lactic acid, this really smooths the skin and also relieves dryness. The anti inflammatory properties of green tea, lavender, tea tree and chamomile oils also soothe and soften the skin.

Exfoliating body scrub by Dermalogica is a super scrub, this also contains ingredients for smoothing and soothing.

If you come into the Salon, we would recommend the hydro active mineral salt scrub, this will soothe away dull skin and also restore vital nutrients.

If you tend to suffer with ingrown hairs, you could try ‘ingrow grow’, a lotion that can ease skin prone to ingrown hairs or razor bumps.

With a little bit of ‘nurturing’, you can have smooth arms and legs to be proud of this summer!
