  1. OUR FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS GIFTS

Comments Off on OUR FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS GIFTS

Exchanging gifts is always a part of a lovely relationship but, how can you find the best gift for that someone special without just plain asking her/him?  Woe betide the functional gifter, okay so we all know to stay away from grey socks, blankets and those hand knitted sweaters…..Don’t we? But when faced with “oh, you don’t have to get me anything!” and “sure, I have everything I need” I can understand you must be thinking ” Jez where do I start” yes sometimes these useful practical gifts come in handy but they are not guaranteed to give us Christmas butterflies.

So yes, Christmas is getting closer and as much as we would like to ignore this fact it is probably about time to halt the pattern of Christmas gift buying denial that leaves us hitting the shops a few days before Christmas searching for the illusive perfect gift leaving us being a ball of stress right before Christmas…. really not how we should live, eh?

Every woman is different and that can make it very hard to find the perfect gift for the important woman in your life, I can only speak for me ( and the team at Beauty Haven) so we  have put together a list of our favorite Christmas gifts to receive and here’s hoping that our love ones read this too !!!!

    JO MALONE

What absolute joy I feel when I receive anything from this brand, from the packaging, tissue paper and then the delightful product inside from their candles, body oils, diffusers…… oh I would gladly receive anything from this range, every scent takes me on a wonderful journey.

    JAR OF LOVE NOTES

One Christmas I got a jar filled with little notes from my husband ( blessed, I know) All notes said things like “you’re beautiful” , ” I am so glad I met you”, ” you’re my everything” . I have to say it was one of the sweetest things I have ever received.

    A SWEET WEEKEND GETAWAY

With a lot of us having extremely busy lives, and if like me and my husband we are literally like passing ships in the night, we are certainly blessed with three beautiful children and with that certainly comes  a hefty amount of expense, so when my husband has days off I am working and vice versa. Thankfully we are able to do so, but resulting we hardly see each other never mind spend QUALITY time together, so here lies my appreciation of receiving my husband’s time. It is the most precious thing you can give or receive and I cherish it, if you have the money take her on a small holiday, even a day trip somewhere could be just the ticket!

    DERMALOGICA BODY THERAPY ESSENTIALS   £15.50

We might not have the luxury to visit a spa or desired Beauty Salon of choice as often as we would like with our fast pace lifestyles in receiving this  gift with products to use at home to  leave you feeling like you have had a spa like experience minus the mobile phone, washing and unmade beds all winking at you ( close your eyes, remember SPA TIME)  You will experience your healthiest, smoothest skin from head to toe with our aroma therapeutic favorites, designed to help you recreate the ultimate spa experience in the comfort of your own home, what’s not to love. SKIN PERFECT PRIMER SPF30  –  £38.80

The way I would describe this product is ” Heavenly silk for the face” with a divine smell.  It is a fantastic make-up base which smooth’s away fine lines, brightens and primes for that flawless skin. I know us ladies love that pore free, smooth skin look but may not be fortunate enough to be blessed with or have and time has ebbed away the appearance of it and replaced it with the character lines instead!! But in all seriousness I would love to receive this product as a gift as truthfully although you men might not believe it  ” us women do feel guilty about spending money on ourselves” and to receive this… a makeup primer to smooth out our skin and hold our foundation in place with the added bonus of the SPF 30 is an essential that is far away from the hand knitted sweaters as mentioned before. 2. IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORTH IT?

Comments Off on IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORTH IT?

The question being are you tired of waxing or shaving to get rid of body hair?

Well if you answer yes, maybe this article will help you to decide if laser hair removal is what is missing from your life? I know, I am sure the thought of voluntarily allowing a hot laser to penetrate your delicate skin – may sound like high tech torture, yet an increasing number of women and men might I add are opting for laser hair removal as their means of achieving silky smooth skin and to free themselves of the torture of the constant hair removal battle!!

    HOW DOES IT WORK?

It is always good to have an understanding of how things work, so you can relate to it and understand the science behind it. Laser is pulsed on the area of skin being treated for milliseconds at a time, emitting a beam of light that converts into heat as it passes harmlessly through the skin. The heat that is generated is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle and the shaft,  which inhibits the growth. At Beauty Haven they offer IPL hair removal which stands for Intense Pulse Light, and is a form of light therapy used for various dermatological procedures including hair removal. The difference between laser and IPL is unlike the laser which have just one specific wavelength emitted from the diode depending on what you are targeting, IPL has multiple wavelengths ( all between 500 and 1,200 nanometers) that scatter within the skin.

IPL works by releasing a wave length into the skin which in the case of hair removal targets the pigment (color). It works the same way black clothing absorbs heat on a hot day, versus white clothing which reflects it. This light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and quickly turns to heat which then kills the growing cells that make the hair, however the hair has to be living for it to be effective. What I mean by that is the hair has to be attached to the bulb of growing cells – so when you pull out the hair  it has that little jelly bulb around it, its one of those 20 to 40 % of living hairs  on your body, if it doesn’t have the bulb its a dead hair which is waiting to shed out naturally and another hair is growing under the skin’s surface waiting to take its place. That is really why you need anything between 6-12 treatments as its to catch the hairs in their LIVING CYCLE.

    IS IT PAINFUL?

Well it feels hot, women have described the sensation as similar to having a rubber band snapped against their skin – but remember hair being removed from the root as in the form of waxing is not without the element of some or in my case a lot of discomfort, and at least with the laser you don’t need to endure the process every few weeks for the rest of your days.

    SO, IS IT WORTH IT?

If you are asking me, my answer without a doubt is a straight up YES! I am certainly taken in by the illusion that the media has created in showing us women as desirable with our hair free silky limbs and I personally have to agree that I do prefer my legs, bikini line, my under arms and upper lip (the list goes on and on) that way. but here lies the problem, I really hate having to endure the waxing process every 4 weeks. For those wax virgins __when I say 4 weeks I am not implying that I am graced without hair for 4 weeks, no, no, no I am hair free for 2 weeks tops, and then have to leave the hairs to grow again for the not so  delightful process to be done all over again. So we know with the laser its important to get the hairs at the living stage, and there is no way of really knowing what stage each hair is at  in the beginning of the treatment, which leaves us with an outcome of needing anything from 6-12 treatments with each treatment giving us a sensation of rubber bands being snapped…….. only to be left hair free and in my eyes free from the torture of temporary solutions, yep my answer is, it is certainly worth it.

However laser hair removal is a costly procedure, but some women swear by the procedure saying that convenience and longevity trump the cost and discomfort.

    WHO IS IT BEST FOR?

The best candidates for laser hair removal have dark, coarse hair and light skin, white and grey hair does not respond to laser as well as the laser can not pick up the pigment in the hair to travel to the root. Also  clients with hair lighter than their skin color – for instance, tanned clients with blond hair could not be treated. The industry are hoping that there may be some radio frequency or ultra sound treatments soon to be able to treat clients with white, red or blonde hair, but they are not perfect yet. Remember too, if you have a tan, stay away from any kind of laser or IPL for four weeks as it can target the pigment in the skin and can cause scarring, the same goes for self tanning as the laser can not tell the difference and will still be attracted to the pigment that is  present on the skins surface.

  3. 5 HIGH END PRODUCTS WORTH BUYING

Comments Off on 5 HIGH END PRODUCTS WORTH BUYING

Everyone appreciates a good deal but what we really all love and rate is a good product and they don’t always come with a cheap price tag!

When it comes to hair, makeup and skin care (and clothes obviously) sometimes it can be worth it to spend a little extra cash for quality, and who doesn’t like to splurge every now and then?? There is something so satisfying about stopping by House Of Frazer and leaving with an impeccably wrapped package, even if the package is not for oneself, you still leave carrying your parcel like its a Chanel handbag, which would require serious saving, whereas a Chanel eyeliner still gives you the glamour of the logo.

Spend a bit more on that  one purchase and in the long run you don’t have to spend smaller amounts to replace something, the same goes for beauty, its better to invest in a few key items that usually require you to use less product anyway.

1     JANE IREDALE MINERAL MAKE UP

    compact £12

    refill        £31

I feel a good base is a very important part of your make up and therefore its worth investing a little more to ensure you get a good base suited for your skin. The base to me is so important as it is what everything else sits on and with many ranges and products on the market today it is no wonder we get stressed or confused when trying to pick a brand that you think will suit. JANE IREDALE mineral makeup is known as  ” The Skin Care Make-up” it is so safe and beneficial to use that it is recommended by plastic surgeons and dermatologists throughout the world. I rate this product so highly as not only is it free of chemicals and additives, it is non-comedogenic, will not block my pores and even has anti inflammatory properties which helps to calm and soothe irritated skin, and helps the skin to heal.  Because mineral foundation interacts with the light in a way that adjusts to your own skin tone it is more forgiving than many other brands I have spent money on to trial and then been disappointed in the results!   So if you are unhappy with your current foundation, whether due to its longevity on your skin, the color or just in general, think about spending that little bit more on this foundation, as for me, it has been the best gift I could have given to my skin and my confidence, remember you wear your face every day. x

2     DIOR DIORSHOW ICONIC MASCARA   £25

Dior iconic mascara is a cult classic and one of the highest rated high end beauty products on the market and yes I had to try it. Let me tell you this wee beauty takes multi tasking to the next level by separating, curling and lifting, oh and it lasts 24hours without smudging, so if like me you’re tired of eye makeup that can’t keep up with you, pick up this mascara ASAP.

3     SK-11 FACIAL TREATMENT MASK     £89.99 pack consist of 10 sheets

Who is with me? I just love to read about what is in celebrities make-up bags or what product’s they say they couldn’t live without, (okay maybe not couldn’t live without , but you know the meaning) . The SK-11 FACIAL TREATMENT MASK is one I see mentioned over and over again, celebrities like Kate Basworth and Chrissy Teigen love these masks because traveling as often as they do wrecks havoc on their skin. They say just 15 minutes with one of them on after their umpteenth plane ride, really brings the life back into their face. I might not travel as often as those girls do, but I work long hours, have three young children and definitely don’t get nearly  enough sleep, yes it’s a hefty price tag but sure I could purchase it as a gift to my Mother and sample a sachet myself. So verdict is…. I now CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT these masks which are full of vitamins, amino acids and minerals and literally have the power to fully moisturize my skin ( with visible results, even my husband noticed) leaving me refreshed, more awake and feeling super pampered in minutes, what’s not to love?

4  BOBBI BROWN RICH LIP COLOR   £20

LOVE, LOVE this lipstick it is lightweight but provides full coverage that has great staying power as well as a creamy and non drying formula. I have Old Hollywood Red and I have to say it is perfect red.

5 SHU UEMURA EYELASH CURLER    £20

This classic eyelash curler, seriously delivers you with the perfect curl, Over the years many brands have tried to promise us the same effect with a cheaper price tag, and yes I was hopeful in the illusion of saving money on a product for the  same results, only to be left disappointed but not altogether surprised.

  4. 10 TIPS FOR PREVENTING ACNE

Comments Off on 10 TIPS FOR PREVENTING ACNE

A common misconception is that acne only affects teenagers. But more than ever before, adults are suffering with oily and acneic skin conditions. Clinical studies indicate that between 40-55% of the adult population in the 20-40 age group are diagnosed with a low grade, persistent acne and oily skins, 54% of women older than the age of 25 have some facial acne, which is most likely attributed to hormonal fluctuations that trigger excess sebum resulting in acne.

A sad fact of life : Breakouts don’t only happen to teenagers, but you can win the war against pimples by following these clear skin rules.

Have a look at the list below, your skin will thank you for it.

    1 KEEP SKIN CLEAN

Whether you have acne or not, it is important to wash your face twice daily to remove impurities, dead skin and excess oils, I can remember taking my first  trip to London when I was a nipper (well 18, was a nipper in comparison to now) and after a delightful day shopping (birthday money is a wonderful present) I was shocked to see that my cleansing pad was literally BLACK! and in my youth I wasn’t bothered to  wear any foundation, so horrified I realized  this all came from the pollution my skin was being exposed to ! So regardless of wearing makeup it is vital to cleanse twice a day  but avoid over washing, I know it is tempting to deeply cleanse oily skin, yet it can leads to irritation, especially if you use harsh facial cleansers or scrubs. This will only strip the skin of its protective barrier, leaving it vulnerable to bacteria.

    2 CHANGE PILLOW CASES

You wouldn’t voluntarily smoother your face into a pile of sweat and bacteria for 8 hours straight would you??Well that is what’s happening every night that you go to sleep on unwashed dirty pillow cases. Washing your pillow cases regularly can help prevent acne.

3 CHOOSE ACNE FRIENDLY MAKE UP

The makeup you use and how much you use has a big impact on the health of your skin. It is quite ironic that the product you spend a lot of money on to keep your skin looking good, could potentially be clogging your pores and encouraging the pimples you are trying so hard to hide. Look for products that say “non comedogenic” on the label. Many dermatologists will also recommend lightweight or oil free products with a non-comedogenic label (which means that make-up won’t clog your pores). Also avoid heavy greasy products that contain ingredients like mineral oils and cocoa butter which can cause pimples. Make sure you are washing your make-up off at night even when you are extremely tired, and if on those rare occasions you are enjoying an evening in, that is a great opportunity to let your skin breathe!

    4 CLEAN BRUSHES

I can not stress how important it is to clean your makeup brushes, your brushes are a gathering place for acne causing bacteria, those delightful  makeup tools love to harbor dirt and bacteria, the more often you wash them, the better it is for your skin.

    5 HANDS OFF

Keeping your hands off your face is very important when it comes to preventing acne. Your fingers and hands touch everything throughout the day ( you don’t want to think to deeply, but you get my drift) So do your best to make sure that the bacteria is not being transferred to your face. HANDS OFF!!!

6 CLEAN YOUR BEST FRIEND……… YOUR PHONE!

Yes our faithful companion, until the battery dies and we break out in a cold sweat, maybe it is  just me? But your faithful companion could be just the cause of your pimple breakout, like your hands, your phone collects bacteria by the second. So take an anti bacteria wipe and clean your phone to make sure that the bacteria is not getting on your face and settling into your pores.

    7 EXERCISE

Yes , there is no getting away from it, exercise is good for everything! Another great reason to exercise and stop the excuses in case you were not aware is…. its  great for your skin, it gives your skin a healthy glow (in my case though the GLOW is more red  I look like a ribenna berry) aside from that exercise will also encourage you to consume more fluids not alcohol may I add, increasing your water consumption and we all know there is nothing better for your skin than water. So all that moving about improves your circulation, and helps you to relax, you might not link the feeling of relaxation whilst your body is working hard and you feel like crying wishing you where at home sprawled out on your sofa with either a good book or the TV as your companion! Just insure you remove your makeup before exercise as  you definitely don’t want to clog those pores.

    8  REDUCE STRESS

Stress and acne go hand in hand.

If you didn’t know already then let me break it to you, Stress causes pimples!!!

When our bodies produces the stress hormone, it leads to causing pimples in 2 ways.

1- The hair follicle lining thickens due to the hormones, causing whiteheads and blackheads and if bacteria gets trapped inside, a lovely pimple is formed.

2- Our body directs blood and oxygen to more vital areas leaving skin more dehydrated and prone to more clogged pores and breakouts. To relieve stress I can not stress enough, having a holistic treatment, be it a massage/yoga or even mediation.

    9  EAT HEALTHY

Our Mothers have always told us that no amount of cosmetic products can benefit our skin as eating a healthy diet comprising of fresh fruits and veg can. So come on folks be sure to get your 5 a day!

    10  WASH YOUR HAIR OFTEN

Pay attention to your hair routine, especially if your skin is oily. How you treat your hair can have a big impact on acne especially around your forehead.

There is hope! While acne is not curable, we now know more about controlling acne and there are many effective acne solutions available.

THE KEY IS PREVENTION – STOPPING THE SPOTS BEFORE THEY APPEAR.

  5. IS ELECTROLYSIS HAIR REMOVAL PERMANENT?

Comments Off on IS ELECTROLYSIS HAIR REMOVAL PERMANENT?

Millions of people are embarrassed by their excess facial and body hair. If you are plagued by coarse annoying hairs springing back up as soon as you shave them off, or having to wait until the hairs have grown back with enough length to be able to be waxed again, electrolysis might just be for you. A huge success at present, is laser hair removal and rightly so, but for clients with blonde, grey or white hair, laser hair removal might not be the best option for you. As the laser attacks the pigment in the hair that carries it to the hair shaft to take effect in the follicle if your hair is off a light shade the process will not be as effective. So, in this case electrolysis hair removal is a good choice for you as electrolysis is effective on all skin and hair types. IT IS OFTEN THE BEST ALTERNATIVE FOR THOSE WITH LIGHTER HAIR & IT IS PERMANENT!

So, excited about hair removal but still wondering “What exactly is electrolysis??”

Electrolysis is a time tested method that was invented more than 100 years ago to  remove irritating, ingrown eyelash hairs. This occurs when the eyelash grows in an abnormal way and begins to irritate the eyeball. Electrolysis is the only method of hair removal that can be used in this case as it completely destroys the hair follicle so there will be no regrowth EVER, can you imagine the discomfort of the regrowth against your eyeball!!  Hence to say that electrolysis is the only safe and effective method of hair removal that has been proven to be permanent. With advances and trials over the years electrolysis is not just limited to those painful abnormal eyelash hairs, it is suitable for all of us that suffer from recurring patches of hair  –  after all hair growth is natural, but some people have very dark course hair that causes them great concern. Electrolysis treats each hair follicle with a very fine, disposable sterile needle probe, this needle is inserted directly into the hair follicle and a current is released inside this current destroys the follicle’s ability to reproduce, thereby eradicating hair growth.

COMMON AREAS FOR WOMEN  –  facial areas( top lip, chin, neck, cheeks, eyebrows) breasts, tummy, underarms, bikini line, legs, fingers and toes.

COMMON AREAS FOR MEN  –  are the upper arms, around the ears, top of the nose, eyebrows, top of the back, and cheeks

So whether its hormonal hair growth, especially on the face, Immune illnesses, prescription medicines or just plain hugely inconvenient heredity ( cheers family genes)  can all be factors that lead to your need for something permanent. This type of hair is tough to touch like toothbrush bristles, they are deeper and more strongly rooted than typical facial hair. Laser and IPL offers temporary relief , but again isn’t suitable for all.

It is likely if you are reading this you have already  tried every hair removal method under the sun and have tried almost all of them even the most dubious ones, yet with the temporary methods only offering a very short term solution and the lasers and IPL not able to treat you as successfully if your hair color is on the lighter side or you have been on holiday or going to be exposed to strong sunlight, it like your back at square one. is no wonder you feel angry, depressed and just plain fed up about your situation. Of course you may feel elated from the instant relief when the hair is gone with these temporary methods but when it grows back you feel like your back at square one. For people with these conditions, electrolysis is like  a miracle cure. But take heed it doesn’t happen overnight, in your first treatment , you should clearly explain your expectations of the hair removal treatment, and then the therapist can tell you whether this is the right treatment for you and whether it can achieve the results you’d like.

The number of treatments required will vary from person to person as each client will have a different density of hair growth (e.g..there may be between 50 hairs and 500 hairs packed into a small area of skin tissue, whilst some clients will have less hair which is spaced out) . This means that each treatment will vary, and therefore no actual figure can be put on the number of treatments required, but you will quickly feel and see a difference giving you the confidence to continue with your treatment course.  Also not all our hairs are growing at the same time, and it can be quite a shock to find 3 or 4 hairs on your chin could actually be 30 or more hairs taking turns to grow!! On top of this thickness, skin sensitivity and dryness are other factors that need to be taken into consideration and will affect just how quickly each hair can be eliminated. The only way to deal with a large problem like hair growth is to cut it down into small manageable steps. Instead of trying to just get rid of it all in one go, which I am sorry just cant be done yet, electrolysis treats the problem by working with the hair growth, using it to prevent more hairs from growing.

I cant promise you it will provide dramatic results like when you wax and all hair is instantly gone, but what I can promise you that if you stick with it then you will be left with permanent results and a real sense of achievement.

  6. Top 10 Benefits Of Massage

Comments Off on Top 10 Benefits Of Massage

We know massage can help you relax, but massage can do so much more than that. Here are 10 Healthy reasons to book an appointment.

    1        STRESS RELIEF

Life is stressful enough and it seems like things are moving faster and faster all the time, it is easy to get overwhelmed these days with so much to keep track of. Massage is a much needed time out for many people, it will lower your heart rate and blood pressure and relax your muscles. Receiving a massage allows your body to enter a relaxing rest and recovery mode: an effect that lingers long after the massage is over. massage triggers a host of brain chemistry responses that can result in lasting feelings of relaxation, lowered stress and improved mood.

    2       BOOST IMMUNITY

Several studies have measured the stress hormone called “cortisol” in clients salvia before and after a massage treatment and have found dramatic decreases in the hormone from the clients in which are undergoing massage therapy. Cortisol which is produced when stressed, kills cells that are important for immunity, so when massage  reduces your stress levels and therefore reducing the amount of cortisol in your body will help you to  avoid getting colds or even another illness whilst under stress.

3          MANAGE ANXIETY LINKED WITH DEPRESSION

Depression and anxiety can be a result of a chemical imbalance or an overworked and overtaxed nervous system. Massage can boast the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine which create the feel good factor in our brain, Whatever the cause of our anxiety massage is great for bringing back some balance into the body. Remember that the human body responds strongly to touch.

    4             PAIN MANAGEMENT

One of the biggest reason people seek massage therapy is to relieve pain, whether it is chronic pain from an illness or cramps from excessive exercising, massage is certainly the key to relieving pain. When your body is receiving a massage the effects create a chemical change that reduce pain and stress. Substance P is a brain chemical that is related to pain, studies have found that people with fibromyalgia showed less substance P in their salvia and in conjunction with that reduced pain after a month of twice weekly massages.

    5           GREATHER FLEXIBILITY

Massage loosens and relaxes muscles which relieves our pressure points, by working on our muscles, the connective tissues, tendons, ligaments and joints this  will give clients a greater range of motion and improve your flexibility. Once the pressure points are relieved the body can position itself properly, regular massage can do wonders for your posture and flexibility.

    6           LOWERS BLOOD PRESSURE

High blood pressure is a serious condition that could lead to heart attacks, kidney failures or strokes. Massage reduces hyper tension, this may be because it stimulates pressure receptors that prompt action from the vagus nerve, one of the nerves that emerges from the brain. The valgus nerve regulates blood pressure as well as other functions, so one way of combating high blood pressure is with massage which reduces the stress hormone levels that can cause onset depression, anxiety and anger. Being pain free and stress relieved will greatly decrease your blood pressure and allow you to relax your mind.  Massage can lower blood pressure as it helps take you from a place of stress to a place of rest.

7         IMPROVES HEALING TIME FOR INJURIES

The injured area undergoes a healing process that is divided into three phases

    –   Inflammation

    –    Repair

    –    Remodeling

Massage is beneficial in that it can promote further healing, increasing the  blood flow to help.  With physical therapy, occupational therapy and other forms of rehabilitation are important to the healing and recovery of injuries but it doesn’t totally prevent from experiencing the pain and causing additional injuries, whereas with massage it can help to increase blood flow, relax the muscles to reduce  the recovery time. Also a major benefit of massage is it will ease stress that may be heightened from the pain of the injury.

    8      BETTER  SLEEP

Have you ever dozed off on a massage couch?? If so, you don’t need to be convinced that a massage can promote healthy sleep. A number of studies have examined this link and found it is related to the effects of massage having an affect on delta waves, the kind of brain waves connected to deep sleep. Considering the amount of stress that we surround ourselves with everyday, it is sometimes impossible to allow our minds and bodies to relax. Massage helps to achieve relaxation by loosening tension and relieving over worked muscles. In addition to relaxing your body, massage also calms a racing mind.

    9          BREATHE BETTER

Massage plays an important part in training the body on how to relax and help improve breathing. Respiratory issues such as allergies, sinus problems, asthma or bronchitis are one group of conditions that can benefit from massage. Not only will massage improve breathing, but also posture and this can lead to the chest area opening more which is required for optimal lung function.

    10       RELIEVES HEADACHES

Next time a headache hits, try booking a last minute massage!  Massage decreases frequency and severity of tension headaches, studies have showed that client who have received massage therapy exhibited fewer migraine headaches and better sleep. Massage for headaches can also reduce muscle spasms and trigger points.
