Effective Solution for Spots

Acne is stereotypically thought to be a teenage problem, however more and more it is becoming prevalent in adults.

How does adult acne differ from teen acne?

Adult acne differs markedly from the spots of your teenage years, both in how it appears and how it’s treated.

In teens, you’ll mostly see hundreds or thousands of tiny bumps, blackheads or whiteheads on the skin of the face, especially the forehead, along with occasional cysts on the chest and back, which is because teens’ skin tends to be a little oilier and therefore more likely than adults to get clogged pores.

In adults, acne is more likely to appear on the lower part of the face, especially around the mouth and jawline. It’s usually deeper nodules or red papules in those areas. The fine little bumps of teen acne can still happen in adulthood, but it’s much less common.

What causes acne?

Acne develops when hormonal shifts (like the kind that occur during puberty, and in women, before a menstrual period and sometimes prior to menopause) cause an overproduction of oil and cells inside a skin follicle. Together, they form a kind of biological bottleneck that plugs the opening of the pore and causes the follicle beneath to swell.

This allows for the overgrowth of bacteria normally found on skin, which produce irritating chemical substances that further fuel the inflammation. The end result is acne.

How can you treat it?

The goal of acne treatment is to reduce or clear up the spots through skin care or treatments to inhibit sebum production, limit bacterial growth, encourage shedding of skin cells and unclogging pores.

Here at Beauty Haven we offer a range of treatments to target acne, as well as scarring that can often be left behind from previous blemishes.

The Hydroxy Acid Exfoliation facial (£45) is ideal for acne prone skin. Dermalogica’s revolutionary blend of hydroxy acids, enzymes and vitamins will thoroughly remove dulling surface debris and stimulate cell renewal.

If you do know a teen who is struggling with acne (or just wants an education on skin care), we also offer a Dermalogica Teenage Facial (£25).

The Acne Treatment using our laser Ellipse targets the acne and scar tissue and helps even out the skins complexion (starts from £60).

Finally, we also have the Mesoestetic Facial Peel (£50) which offers quick and very efficient solutions to the skins needs. It can be used to target acne scarring.
*A course of 6 is recommended*

Sometimes, acne can occur on other places on the body such as the back and/or chest. We offer the Dermalogica Perscriptive Body Treatment (£55) which starts with a scrub to prepare the skin for your Sea Mud Pack to purify and detox the skin. While the mask is on, you receive a relaxing scalp massage.

Also, if it is just the back you wish to target, there is the Purifying Back Cleanse (£35) which involves a purifying cleanse, exfoliation and mask treatment on that hard to reach area.

What products should you use?

For adult acne, Dermalogica’s “MediBac” line offers a wide range of products for individuals suffering with blemished and breakout-prone skin, below are listed just a few of their products.

Clearing Mattifier clears breakouts, reduces congestion and controls shine. Silicones melt gently into the skin helping to diminish lines and smooth texture.
*We at Beauty Haven have found that this can double perfectly as a primer for makeup if you tend to have shiny/oil prone skin!*

Overnight Clearing Gel contains salicylic acid to slough off pore-clogging skin cells, as well as antiseptic Tea Tree Oil to soothe while you sleep.

Special Clearing Booster (applied beneath moisturiser) contains 5% Benzoyl Peroxide concentrate, fortified with Zinc Sulphate, Tea Tree and Sage to help control bacteria, reduce inflammation and irritation.
