  1. IS REFLEXOLOGY SAFE DURING PREGNANCY?

Comments Off on IS REFLEXOLOGY SAFE DURING PREGNANCY?

Are you feeling tired, uncomfortable or nauseous in your pregnancy? Well you may be surprised to know that an ancient form of healing called reflexology can actually help treat many common pregnancy ailments and even help you during your labor.

    WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY?

Reflexology has been around for over 4000 years, originally practiced by the Ancient Egyptians and Chinese but it was first recognized in the Western World in 1913 when Dr William Fitzgerald noticed that pressure on specific parts of the body can have an anaesthetizing effect on corresponding areas in the body. This was further developed in the 1930s by Eunice Ingham, who defined reflexology as it is practiced today.

Reflexology is a natural, non invasive healing treatment that uses pressure points on the feet and sometimes the hands to balance out other parts of the body. The idea is that this pressure allows blocked energy to flow freely which increases blood flow and the removal of toxin waste and did I not mention the treatment is bliss, feels amazing even for those like myself with extremely sensitive tickly feet.

Stimulating these reflexes properly can solve many health problems in a natural way, a type of preventative maintenance, it really is an advance in the health field though many do confuse it with a massage.

    PRE – CONCEPTUAL CARE

In an ideal world the time to begin to prepare your body for pregnancy is about 4 months before conception. The  most important developments in the womb take place in the early weeks of pregnancy so it is a good idea when planning a pregnancy to ensure your body is in optimum condition to carry a baby and to rid the body of as many toxins as possible.

    REFLEXOLOGY DURING PREGNANCY

Reflexology is one of the most relaxing therapies you can choose to have during pregnancy. It is considered perfectly safe and improves your general well being, I find it as many others do to be extremely relaxing as it helps your body to adjust to all the major hormonal changes that you are undergoing.

I have been truly blessed with 3 beautiful children and feel pregnancy is truly a wonderful thing and many women adjust perfectly to the hormonal changes that are taking place, unlike myself! Sometimes though its also the husbands , that struggle with our hormonal changes and can cause them a lot of grief! No sympathy may I add.

These changes can affect our bodies and minds in many different ways and can include anything from morning sickness (which can last most of the day if you are really unfortunate), backache, digestive problems, anxieties, fears, tension, heartburn, bladder problems, mild cramping sleeplessness and even hemorrhoids (oh the joys!!)

I have to say I could put my hand up to each and every one of those pregnancy aliments, no wonder I was SLIGHTLY difficult to live with, I may feel now 8,7 & 5 years after the pregnancies a slight bit sorry for my hubby. In all seriousness I found with regular treatments of reflexology it certainly helped to ease these aliments.

There is very little that cant be addressed in a reflexology treatment as the aim is to bring about balance and wellness in the whole person YOU. For this reason, you might find that improvements in areas that you didn’t come to have treat, another bonus.

    IS REFLEXOLOGY IN PREGNANCY SAFE?

Obviously when you are pregnant, you want to make sure that everything you do is safe for you and your baby. Whether you are concerned about what foods you are eating, how much alcohol if any is allowed ? And the same goes for any treatment holistic or non invasive they are or seemed to be. Midwife Hannah Hulme Hunter says

“Reflexology is generally considered safe in pregnancy, provided all is well with your pregnancy and your Reflexologist knows that you are pregnant”

    CONCLUSION

So many of the aliments us women experience whilst carrying our unborn baby will be assisted through regular reflexology treatments.

Throughout your pregnancy a Reflexology treatment will focus on relaxation, which is paramount in assisting a straight forward labour and birth.

Research has also shown that women who have reflexology during their pregnancy are more likely to give birth at full term and have shorter labors requiring less pain relief.

Other known benefits during pregnancy are :-

    * Relief from morning sickness

*Relief from sciatic pain and back ache

*reduction of swelling in ankles and general fluid retention

    *relief from stress and anxiety

    *helping to lower blood pressure

    * Helping with insomnia and lack of sleep

    * Turning a breech baby

    * Preparation for labor

With these facts alone I myself would recommend booking a Reflexology appointment to ease your self through your pregnancy.

However there are also times when it is not advisable to have reflexology when pregnant, it should be avoided if :-

    * You are at risk of pre-eclampsia

    * You have deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

    * You have Placenta Previa after 32 weeks gestation

    BABY IS HERE

Once you have had your baby , reflexology does not need to stop, well apart from finding the TIME!!

There are many great benefits of continuing treatment post labor such as assisting with :-

    * Postnatal depression

    * Increase in energy levels

    * Inadequate lactation to allow breastfeeding

    * Sleep problems

    * Backache

    * rebalancing the body to allow your menstrual cycle to return to normal

My own personal conclusion is that continuing with reflexology  after birth will encourage a speedy recovery from the labor and most importantly, some much needed time out for new mums!!

  2. HOW TO ACHIEVE CLEAR SKIN?

Comments Off on HOW TO ACHIEVE CLEAR SKIN?

    HOW TO ACHIEVE CLEAR SKIN

How to achieve a clear skin is a dream for all of us, yet for women with the application of makeup to contend with, having clear skin just makes these things a whole lot easier!

Yet for many of us it still remains a dream. Everyone wants picture perfect, flawless skin myself included, we linked it as one of the main elements of a persons beauty and yes healthy skin helps you feel beautiful as well.

Your skincare routine and lifestyle habits are the primary predictors of your skins health. Some of the leading factors that take a toll on the quality and texture of your skin are :-

    Stress

    Lack of sleep

    Poor nutrition

    Sun damage

    Smoking

    Drinking Alcohol

If you are struggling to keep your skin clear mentally and physical you are not on your own, here is an insight to my own personal journey…….

Throughout school my skin was actually good and I was lucky, puberty was kind to me (maybe not as kind to my mother) and only gave me the occasional red spot that I must say healed very quickly on their own. I ignorantly thought I would enjoy such bliss for the rest of my life, oh how wrong I was!

In my late teens I qualified as a Beauty Therapist and clients would often pass comment on how good my complexion was and enquired what products was I using to obtain that result? Blissfully I proudly showed off my glowing complexion and never thought about the trials that I would face in years to come.

Then the nightmare for me began, I started to break out, boy calling it a “breakout” is an understatement, it was uncontrollable. The more I turned to my faithful lotions and potions to clear my skin the more pimples I seemed to get. In fact I really don’t think a day literally went by without me getting what felt like another 5 huge SORE pimples to add to my collection.

Needless to say I wanted to stay at home 24/7, found facing anyone really difficult especially clients, as a Beauty therapist you feel like you are an advertisement of your knowledge through your skin, and I had been fortunate before, that my  skin was an asset.

I know acne can not kill you, but it sure does kill your self esteem and launch you into a whirlpool of sinking depression, after going through a lot of trials  and even more errors, I discovered that I needed to literally change a lot of my odd habits and my lifestyle.

    CALM DOWN

I know it is easier said than done, but it is vital that we take some “down time” to unwind and relax. Stress is a real disease and the stress hormones increase oil production, which can lead to clogged pores and whiteheads. So take some time and make an effort to relax when needed.

“Anything that reduces stress in your body- yoga, tai-chi, running, a warm bath will make you have less acne” says Richard Fried, a dermatologist.

    CLEAR SKIN DIET

What you eat, is what you are

What you eat ultimately reflects on your face, your diet provides nutrients to your body to repair the damaged tissues, mend collagen, build new cells and bones, produce enzymes and proteins etc…

What I am recommending is a diet which includes fruits and veg, fibre, lean protein, complex carbohydrates which are less in saturated fats.

Consume berries, BEST food for clear skin as they contain antioxidants that work as anti skin aging.

Avoid excess alcohol and smoking as these result into premature skin aging.

    DRINK LOTS OF WATER

“Water helps clear the toxins that cause inflammation and blemishes”

Water cleanses your body, helping it to eliminate toxins, it also hydrates you and rids your skin of dirt and oils. Also if you are dehydrated it will most certainly show in your face.

Drinking 3 cups of ORGANIC RED CLOVER TEA a day will certainly improve your skin as it is a natural blood purifier which can help your acne clear up.

    SLEEP SMART

GET YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP, sleep deprivation and stress can manifest as bad skin, so make sure you are getting 7 to 8 hours of quality rest every night.

You might be getting dirt and oil on your face while you are sleeping without even realizing it, so by trying these tricks you will minimize your risk:-

Change your pillowcases at least once a week, your pillowcase collect dust, saliva and other grime, which make it onto your face every time you sleep. Put your pillowcases through the wash or change them out regularly for best results.

Running low on sleep, pick up some Soy milk, I would keep a carton in my fridge to “fake a good nights sleep”  as its natural anti-inflammatory reduces swelling while the soy proteins hydrate skin to soften the look of crows feet. To make soothing redness busting compresses, pour a small amount of soy milk in a bowl, soak 2 cotton balls and apply over your eyes( or any other area where you have red or irritated skin ) for 5 minutes.

    EXERCISE

Take care of your body and exercise and eat right , basically if your insides are healthy, then it will show on your face.

Exercise will help get rid of the redness and acne by circulating the oxygen, also by increasing the blood flow with exercise you are nourishing the skin cells and keeping them vital.

Exercise is an excellent STRESS BUSTER  and remember stress activates oil production!

    PRODUCTS

There are definitely certain ingredients that have proven themselves in clinical trials these are :-

    Benzoyl

    Glycolic Acid

    Salicylic Acid

They do need at least a few weeks to work but I would highly recommend them and give them a chance.

Try RETINOIDS, retinoids are not just for wrinkles, they also fade spots, build collagen and prevent acne but only when used correctly.

Use at night instead of your overnight acne treatment, using them on your skin as a whole helps with cell turnover.

Don’t be looking for an over night cure or magic bullet, try making these small changes each day to help get glowing skin.

  4. LASER/ IPL TREATMENTS FOR ACNE CLEARANCE

Comments Off on LASER/ IPL TREATMENTS FOR ACNE CLEARANCE

LASER TREATMENTS FOR ACNE CLEARANCE & DOES IT WORK?

Acne is a common problem in adolescents and younger adults. Although I say a “common problem” when you suffer from acne it certainly makes you feel quite isolated and alone. Another common misconception is that acne only affects teenagers, but more than ever before, adults are suffering with oily and acneic skin conditions.

Clinical studies indicate that between 40 and 55% of the adult population in the 20-40 age group are diagnosed with a low grade, persistent acne and oily skin.

According to the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology, 54% of women older than the age 25 have some facial acne, which is most likely attributed to hormonal fluctuations that trigger excess sebum resulting in acne.

Acne arising in adulthood is more likely to be inflammatory, with fewer blackheads than teenage adult and with the spots mainly located around the mouth, chin and jaw line.

Adults will often have sensitized skin or a combination of skin conditions in addition to their acne, which makes treatment more challenging with solely the use of creams .

WHAT ARE THE TRIGGERS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO ACNE?

The primary catalyst of adult acne is chronic stress, balancing personal and professional responsibilities makes this generation of adults the most time- compressed generation in history. This leads to chronic stress, when you are under constant, continued and heightened levels of stress that throws your adrenal glands into over drive which in turn can boast sebum production, setting the stage for acne development.

While stress creates the trigger for acne, there are 4 main factors that contribute to the development of acne

1  –  Overactive sebaceous glands (the production of too much oil)

2  –  Dead skin build up

    3  –  Bacteria

    4  –  Inflammation

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO HELP TREAT, CLEAR AND PREVENT ADULT ACNE?

In order to control acne, we must interrupt the degeneration of the follicle by affecting the 4 main contributing factors.

There are 5 different kinds of acne and the Ellipse can treat 3 of them

1  –  ACNE VULGARIS  Clogging of the hair follicles that leads to unsightly and sometimes painful skin lesions and pimples.

2  –  ACNE CONGLOBATA  Covers the back chest and buttocks with spots and nodules which might cause a severe bacterial infection as well as extensive scarring.

3  –  ACNE ROSACEA  An inflammation of face, neck and chest.

    HOW??

The Ellipise treatment reduces the blood supply to the sebaceous gland, slowing down the production of sebum. To do this short, safe burst of intense pulsed light is directed at the skin. The systems filters the light to ensure the wavelengths used are absorbed by the blood in the fine blood vessels that supply the sebaceous glands.

Basic terms the Ellipise treatment will reduce the oil glands by attacking the blood supply and also kills of bacteria on the skin.

To maximize the effect, Ellipise IPL treatment is used in conjunction with the drug ADAPALENE. Adapalene is the active substance in the products marketed as Redap and Differin. These products are available as a cream or gel, they work by normalizing the cells and also have anti-inflammatory properties.

They should be applied to the skin once daily before sleeping and when used in combination with Ellipise , adapalene should be given for up to 4 weeks prior to treatment as the effect is to normalize the skins thickness allowing greater light penetration. Therefore better results!

An exfoliating facial one month pior to treatment can also be helpful.

HOW LONG DOES AN ELLIPISE TREATMENT TAKE?

It takes approximately 45 minutes to treat the full face , including consultation and preparation, a typical course of therapy is 4 treatments , a month apart

The treatment is practically pain free, like a flick from a rubber band followed by a sensation similar to the feeling of gentle warmth after a day on the beach.

    WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?

You may notice some general redness on the face .

  5. OUR TOP 5 MAKEUP TIPS

Comments Off on OUR TOP 5 MAKEUP TIPS

BEAUTY HAVEN’S TOP 5 MAKE UP TIPS

We all love to look our best each day and having beautiful skin and make up can give you a little confidence boost each morning, however, juggling all of life’s activities can often mean that your makeup routine flies out the window.

With a few tips and tricks you don’t have to be a professional to have fabulous looking make up!!

Skin is the most important thing, if your skin is not in great shape than covering it with make up will not really solve any problems, by keeping your skin moisturized, you will minimize quite a few common skin problems like fine lines and dry patches.

    STEP 1   –  PRIME

It is so quick to do and will give you a long lasting finish to your foundation, yes ladies priming needs to be part of your daily routine. There is an extended range from primers, BB creams and CC creams on the market now, here I have listed my 2 favorites by far :-

Smooth Affair Facial Primer & Brightener ( Jane Iredale)

By using this product you will moisturize and prime your skin in one easy step. This gem is also packed with antioxidants so your skin is instantly transformed into a conditioned and luminous look. All you require is a small pea size amount of product, dab onto the forehead, nose, chin and cheeks withy fingertips.

    Skin Perfect Primer (Dermalogica)

Love this primer as the velvety silicones combined with Soy Protein helps even out skin texture creating a smoother surface, you also have within this primer Peral powder and Earth minerals which provide a natural tint for visible luminosity and radiance. Not only does this primer offer you a smoother canvas for make up application it also has a SPF30 to shield your skin from UV light.

    STEP 2  –  FOUNDATION

Getting your base right is so vital to your overall finish look.

JANE IREDALE is known as the “Skin Care Makeup” as the founder, Jane herself always thought of makeup as an essential part of a woman’s sense of well being and she wanted to make that easy to achieve. She was the first to supply this with a line of makeup that had skin care benefits.

With JANE IREDALE foundation,  the highest quality ingredients are used to ensure satisfaction with performance, coverage, application and texture. Our minerals conform to the most current technology available that ensures  broad spectrum sun protection.

The foundation is a multi – testing product that provides 4 important functions in one :-  foundation, concealer, sunscreen and has active skin care benefits.

Due to the high quality of minerals in this foundation they interact with light, this is what gives them their soft focus effect. As Jane Iredale uses pure mineral pigment with no fillers such as talc their foundation give exception coverage that require minimal touch ups.

JANE IREDALE makeup forms a protective barrier on the skin that allows it to breather and function normally with Laboratory test confirming that all of their products are non-comedogenic and does not block pores.

This foundation also offers you sun protection with a difference!! Jane Iredale products have earned the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal Of Recommendation. To earn this seal a manufacturer must provide scientific data showing its products sufficiently and safety AID in the preventation of sun induced damage to the skin.

    STEP 3  –  LASHES

Looking for that instant eyelift  and high impact, coat your lashes with mascara, not a good look is coating your lashes with clumpy mascara! Lets face it, this happens to every tube of mascara over time. The problem is it dries out and then starts to form unattractive lumps. To prevent this, don’t pump your mascara trying to get more on your wand as you are basically pumping air into the tube causing it to dry out even faster.

I know that mascara should be replaced every 3-4 months, yet I always need to replace mine much sooner just because it dries out so fast!!! But a tip to fix  that………………

Add a drop or 2 of saline eye drops into the tube and then rub the wand around inside, the solution softens the mascara liquid making it apply as if it were a brand new tube .

STEP 4  –  MAKE EYES APPEAR BIGGER

Ladies if you don’t already own a white pencil, invest in one now for this simple trick! Instead of lining your water line with dark eyeliner, use a white pencil to create the illusion of a bigger eye.

    STER 5   –  EYEBROWS

Groomed brows make such a difference to the overall appearance of your makeup. Finding your natural or preferred brow shape is something that can brighten up your face without even putting on a single swipe of makeup. Its very important to maintain your eyebrows once you have found the right shape to compliment your eyes as well as your face. I really do suggest you have them shaped professional as I personally made the mistake many moons ago of having a friend do mine, and believe me it literally took me a good 2-3 years to get them back into a decent shape!

With the 5 key tips being your primer, base and eyes you can have fun and experiment!

  6. IS ELECTROLYSIS PERMANENT?

Comments Off on IS ELECTROLYSIS PERMANENT?

First of all I am sure there are many of you that are wondering “What is Electrolysis?” as lately it seems to have taken a back seat from the laser and Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatments have become more widely available both in concept and price.

    WHAT IS ELECTROLYSIS?

Electrolysis is not only a method of hair removal, it is the only PERMANENT method of hair removal. It wasn’t until 1875 that electrolysis was invented by Dr Charles Michel , a St Louis ophthalmagist,  in which devised this system to remove patients painful ingrown eyelashes. In 1875 he performed his first treatment with great success despite the lack of modern sophisticated equipment.

Over the years its been improved with modern technology, in 1945 Henri St Pierre (electrologist) and Arthur Hinkle (engineer) created a new “blend” method and now this kinder, gentler and more effective method contributed towards electrolysis hair removal becoming a insiders beauty secret!

Thankfully those days when it was reserved for the elite, models and actresses are long gone.

Electrolysis treats each hair follicle individually with a very fine, disposable sterile needle. The needle is inserted easily into the hair follicle itself and once inserted a current is released which causes localized damage to the areas that generate hairs, thereby eradicating hair growth.

Electrolysis does permanently destroy the growth cells of the hair follicle, preventing treated hairs from EVER growing back. The treatment can be performed to most facial and body parts including eyebrows, chin, upper and lower lip, jaw line, sides of face, even the breasts, underarms, abdomen, bikini line, finger and toes, legs and back.

Yes, I know with lasers and IPL treatments they too can be carried out on the face and body but what lasers/IPL treatments cannot promise  is permanent hair removal, although they will definitely provide you with permanent hair reduction. Another huge benefit with electrolysis is any hair type on any skin tone can be treated. As the laser/IPL system of hair removal can only be really effective on those clients with dark hair on pale skin tones, as the light energy is attracted to the pigment in the hair itself and uses this to conduct the energy into the root of the hair. When there is no pigment within the hair ( if the hair is white, grey and blonde) then the energy isn’t able to travel to the root to be effective in preventing further hair growth.

Whereas with electrolysis the needle is inserted INTO the hair follicle , so regardless of clients hair color or skin tone the current (in this case) is released with successful results in destroying the follicles ability to reproduce. With treating each individual hair there is a drawback , it can be a lengthy process which each client must take into consideration. As we are working very closely  in a concentrated area, the time has to be limited due to the clients skin sensitively, the least time being 0-10 minutes with the longest time being 30 minutes, but take heed it doesn’t happen overnight. In your first treatment you should clearly explain your expectations of the hair removal treatment, and then the therapist can tell you whether this is the right treatment for you and whether it can achieve the results you’d like.

The number of treatments required will vary from person to person as each client will have a different density of hair growth ( eg. there may be between 50-500 hairs packed into a small area of skin tissue, whilst some clients will have less hair which is spaced out. This means that each treatment will vary, and therefore no actual figure can be put on the number of treatments required. Yet I can assure you will quickly feel and see the difference giving you the confidence to continue with your treatment course. Also not all our hairs are growing at the same time, and it can be quite a shock to find 3 or 4 hairs on your chin could actually be 30 or more hairs taking turns to grow!!

On top of this factors  like thickness, skin sensitivity and dryness need to be taken into consideration and will affect just how quickly each hair can be eliminated. The only way to deal with a large problem like hair growth is to cut it down into small manageable steps. instead of trying to just get rid of it all in one go, which I am very sorry just cant be done yet. Electrolysis treats the problem by working with the hair growth using it to prevent more hairs from growing.

I can not promise you it will provide dramatic results like when you wax and all the hairs are instantly gone, but what I will promise you is if you stick with it you will be left with permanent results and a real sense of achievement.
