  1. Living with Eczema.

Comments Off on Living with Eczema.

For those who can slather on a full face of make up in the morning and leave the house with a flawless skin, you are truly blessed.

Many people suffer with hot, itchy skin, often associated with skin dryness, the skin is inflamed and irritated and even make up won’t conceal their misery, this condition, better known as eczema or atopic dermatitis (being atopic, means having a genetic tendency for your immune system to make increased levels of IgE antibodies to certain allergens. An atopic individual is likely to have more than one allergic condition during their lifetime, such as eczema, asthma, hay fever or food allergy.)

Some simple tips to help you cope with Eczema:

    • Eczema can be exacerbated by anxiety and other forms of stress. Try meditation or yoga, take some time for yourself. Reflexology and massage are great ways to help you destress, talk to one of our therapists about the many benefits of reflexology. An amazing treatment for relaxation and creating a feeling of well being in the body.
    • Keep your nails short and clean to lessen the trauma from scratching. Scratching causes the body to release histamine, which further aggravates symptoms. A hot environment increases itching so keep your home cool.
    • Keep the skin soft and supple. This can be done by using emollients, which keep the skin moist and flexible. Emollients soothe and relieve the itch, producing an oily layer over the skin surface which traps water beneath it. The resulting restoration of the skin’s barrier function by emollients prevents penetration of irritants, allergens and bacteria thereby reducing or preventing the development of eczema. These are available from your GP.
    • Consider whether anything at work may exacerbate your eczema. What are your triggers? Do you find after something you eat your skin flares up or after using hand soap or a certain shampoo. Keep a note for a couple of weeks and see if you can pinpoint any of your triggers.
    • When outside take care not to allow skin to become sunburnt. There are specially formulated sunscreens available for eczema sufferers that do not contain some of the ingredients which may make the skin become more irritated.
    • Water can have a drying effect on skin, use gel or cream based cleansers rather than facial washes.
    • Seasons of the year (for example, in winter), or even emotional responses (such as stress), may cause eczema to worsen.

    Natural Remedies

    •  Cider Vinegar has long been used to soothe skin inflammation and burns and it is also a disinfectant. You can use cotton balls to apply the vinegar directly to scaly areas, or apply to larger areas with a clean paper towel dipped in 1 part vinegar to 1 part water. Note: Do not use this remedy if your skin is cracked or bleeding, as the vinegar will sting and irritate the area
    • Olive oil is another natural oil packed with omega-3 fatty acids which reduce inflammation. Try rubbing some warm olive oil into affected areas of the skin to soften scaly patches. If psoriasis is affecting your scalp, try working some olive oil into your scalp while showering to loosen and remove the dried skin. Adding olive oil to your diet can also help heal your skin from the inside out.
    • Flaxseeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, and they help block a chemical in your body called arachidonic acid which causes inflammation. Grind up a few tablespoons of flaxseed and add to smoothies, oatmeal, granola, or salads. You can also use flaxseed oil as a dressing for salads and veggies.
    • Rub a few drops of tea tree oil diluted in a little olive oil, into your dry skin or psoriasis patches several times a day. The Australian remedy is useful for relieving itch and softening plaques, especially if you have a mild case.
    • Pure aloe vera is rich in anti-inflammatory and healing compounds, and provides a nice cooling sensation to itchy skin. If you have eczema or psoriasis, consider growing your own aloe plant so you can take the gel straight from its natural source. Pure aloe vera gel can also be found at most drug stores and health food stores.
    • Numerous studies have linked the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil to improvement in eczema and psoriasis when taken in high doses, between 3 and 10 grams a day. Talk to your doctor about taking a fish oil supplement. Meanwhile, olive oil, flaxseed, nuts, and fatty fish, such as salmon, sardines, herring, mackerel, and tuna are all good natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Aim for at least three 3 to 4 ounce servings of canned fatty fish per week. Note: omega-6 fatty acids, found in safflower, sunflower, and corn oil, have been shown to worsen inflammation.
    • Our clients love Dermalogica’s Barrier repair. This unique anhydrous (waterless) moisturiser melts gently into skin to help shield against environmental and internal triggers that cause skin stress.
    • Jane Iredale mineral make up is a skincare makeup and will not irritate the skin. Available at Beauty Haven we can advise you on the best product within the range to suit your skin.

  2. Are Chemical Peels worth it?

Comments Off on Are Chemical Peels worth it?

If you are looking for a relaxing treatment then this is not the facial for you!!!  This is a results based treatment – Customer testimonials over the years have been fantastic and we have a huge base of customers who return for this treatment on a regular basis.

If you have any of the following conditions you might be a good candidate for Chemical Peel.

    • Pigmentation, such as sun spots or blotchy skin, often a result of sun damage.
    • Scaring such as acne scars or chicken pox scars.
    • Fine lines or wrinkles.

Like other resurfacing treatments, a chemical peel is effective in treating wrinkles, blotchiness or age spots, and scars from acne or other causes. It can be used on the entire face or specific areas. Certain other characteristics of your skin, such as its thickness and texture, may influence whether you are a good candidate for chemical peel.

What is involved in the treatment?

A chemical peel is a skin resurfacing technique in which a chemical solution is applied to the face to remove the outer surface layers of skin, allowing new, healthier skin to emerge. Chemical peels come in a range of strengths, from a deeper Phenol Peel to more superficial peels, such as a Glycolic Acid peel.At Beauty Haven we use mesoestetic peels, the range includes glycol, lactic, salicylic and mandelic acids to the use of premixed combined peels.

The peel involves the application of a solution to the entire face or to specific areas to peel away the skin’s top layers. Several light to medium-depth peels can often achieve similar results to one deeper peel treatment, with less risk and shorter recovery time.

Peel solutions may contain alpha hydroxy acids, tricholoracetic acid (TCA) or phenol, and peel “depth” or the number of skin layers removed, is determined by both solution ingredients and concentration.

Generally, the most superficial peels are those using alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as glycolic acid. Often just a single treatment with an AHA peel will give your skin a fresher, healthier appearance and a radiant glow. Repeated treatments can help to further improve the texture of your skin. AHA peels can reduce the effects of aging and sun damage including fine wrinkling and brown spots. Your surgeon will recommend a maintenance program using AHA products that you can apply at home on a regular basis.

No anesthesia or sedation is needed, and you will only feel a tingling or mild stinging sensation when the solution is applied to your face. Immediately after the procedure, you generally will be able to wear makeup. approximately 3-5 days post peel the skin can feel dry and tight and may become a bit flaky, the key is to keep nourishing the skin and ensure you are wearing an SPF 50 on a daily basis as the treatment can cause photosensitivity.

Flawless skin doesn’t have to be for the rich and famous. The treatment costs £65 for a single session however for optimum results we recommend a course of 6. (Pay for 5 and get one free)  The results of this treatment can include:

    • Rejuvenated and brighter skin
    • Revival of dull skin
    • Removal of dead skin cells
    • Even skin texture and tone
    • Reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
    • Smoother, softer skin
    • Eliminated pigmentation and reduced effects of sun damage
    • Reduction of inflammation and breakouts caused by acne
    • Hydrated and nourished skin
    • Stimulated collagen production for plump and youthful looking skin

If in doubt our experienced therapists are on hand to discuss the right treatment plan for you and advise on which acid would best suit your skin concerns.

In most cases we use the following acids for specific skin conditions:

    Best for Hydration

Lactic Acid is particularly suited to flaky skins and/or those displaying early signs of wrinkles and skin raging. This acid will brighten and add luminosity to the skin.

    Best for problematic skin

Salicylic acid Available in concentrations of 10%, 20% and 30% it is particularly recommended in the care of skins with impurities or acne problems as salicylic acid is a sebo-regulator, containing antiseptic, bacteriostatic and fungicidal properties.

    Best for anti-aging

Glycolic Acid -Intensive care for skin, anti-aging treatment to reduce wrinkles or expression lines as well as nourish and hydrate.

Hopefully we’ve given you an insight into this fantastic treatment, please call for further advice.

Rewind back to the late 90’s, eye gloss was THE product to buy believe it or not.it was seen on everyone from the Spice Girls to Gwen Stefani. It can be used across the entire lid from lash to brow, or close to the lash line to up the ante on your eye make-up. Whichever way you go, adding eye gloss is the speediest update to a make-up look you’ll find.If you can get your hands on this snap it up, it seems to be sold out everywhere.

  5. Ditch The Razor In 2017 – Laser For Men

Comments Off on Ditch The Razor In 2017 – Laser For Men

Pampering and beauty treatments have typically been known to be more of a female thing, even many beauty treatments – and salons – are still very much targeted towards women. But why is that so?

Male grooming isn’t any different to that of a woman’s regime, men deserve to feel treated, and kept just as the next female. More recently men have been entering beauty salons for eye brow waxing, eye brow and eye lash tinting, and even laser hair removal.

Often hair removal for men is associated with some sort of sport- bodybuilder, cyclist, swimmer. Years ago, the majority of men could go their entire lives with only removing hair from their face, i.e beard shaving.

How things have changed! Experts have recently stated that more and more men are opting for the same grooming rights as women – including smooth body skin! These days, hair removal is no more unusual than moisturising. In fact, according to research company Euromonitor, 3 out of ten 18-34 year olds remove body hair regularly, with 9 out of 10 of them reckoning they look better as a result. What’s more, surveys have repeatedly shown that women prefer their men to be smooth too.

Excessive or unsightly body hair can be upsetting for both men and women and difficult or inconvenient to remove. Laser hair removal is a rapid, yet gentle way of removing unwanted hair, and is medically proven to give you permanent hair reduction.

    • Laser hair removal can result in permanent removal of unwanted hair. Statistics show that 60-95% of targeted hair is permanently gone after the recommended course of treatments.

    • Laser hair removal is an effective treatment for ingrown hairs. No more irritating skin and red bumps caused by those ingrown hairs we are all affected by.

    • Laser hair removal procedure is much shorter than other methods such as electrolysis. Advancements in technology means you are able to carry on with your daily routine straight away with no down time.

    • No more shaving or waxing! Someone can shave 11,540 times in one lifetime – with statistics like this it is easy to see why anyone would like to remove unwanted hair permanently.

    • Laser hair removal is carried out by our fully qualified Practitioners who are specially trained and highly experienced in carrying out laser hair removal treatments. As the laser is passed over the area being treated, the hairs are destroyed, reducing further growth and leaving a silky smooth feel even on sensitive skin.

    • Suitable for a wide variety of hair and skin types.

    * A patch test is required prior to first treatment.

Beauty Haven now have the NEW Ellipse Sirius system. The system uses SWT (selective waveband technology). Short, safe busts of light are directed at the skin.  The treatment works by targeting the melanin (pigment) in the hair with the light from the system, and upon absorption the light is converted into heat. This intense heat action breaks down the hair follicle, reducing the opportunity for any re-growth and also changing the entire structure of the follicle itself; overtime altering the density and appearance of the hair until it becomes unnoticeable.

Prior to treatment the area is shaved before a thin layer of protective gel (similar to that used in ultra sound) is applied to maximise absorption. Finally the Ellipse SWT is run over the area and a succession of light pulses are filtered into the hair follicle. The unique square head technology used in Ellipse treatments offer precision and accuracy that ensures that any risk of side effects is minimal. Any potentially harmful wave lengths are removed via the Unique Dual Filtering system, meaning that the light used is completely safe and visible.

Hair grows in three different cycles and the Ellipse Permanent Hair Reduction can only successfully treat hair during its growth stage. Therefore it is often necessary to undergo a course of 6-8 treatments ensuring that you leave at least 6-8 weeks between each session initially, and then only repeat as and when the hair returns.

To ensure as many hair follicles are targeted as possible it is also important not to undergo any hair removal for at least four weeks before the appointment or during the course of treatment. The same rule applies to any sun treatments, as a tan will raise the pigment level in the skin and have a severe effect on the treatments success.

Skin type is a fundamental effecting factor in this treatment as due to the high level of pigment in the skin darker skin tones often experience more pain during treatment though generally it has been compared to the sensation of a rubber band pinging on your skin.

In the past there have been cases of darker skin’s experiencing burning and as a result many salons do not offer this treatment to those of colour. However Ellipse uses the revolutionary HRD applicator to control the light levels used and prevent any side effects to darker skins. This groundbreaking technology allows them to offer SWT  hair removal to darker skins.

With the Ellipse SWT Permanent Hair Reduction there is little post-treatment care required. Although people with sensitive skin may benefit from using a soothing cream for a few days following treatment, the Ellipse SWT Soothing Gel will do this as well as reducing any potential redness or swelling.

This is the perfect time of year to get started as you are required to have a course of six treatments at six weekly intervals. The treatment cannot be carried out 30 days before or after sun exposure so we have found that starting the treatments in Autumn/Winter will cause less disruption to your treatment plan.

A payment plan can be discussed if cost is a concern, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the team who will be happy to discuss options with you.

  6. Your Beach Body Countdown – Laser Hair Removal

Comments Off on Your Beach Body Countdown – Laser Hair Removal

Here we are, nearly at the end of January in 2017, it’s crazy how fast time actually flies, before we all know it, it will be bikini season! So why not prepare now for that perfect beach body – and by perfect I mean hair-free! How fantastic would it be to not have to pack a razor or hair removal creams when you are getting ready for your summer holiday this year.

Prior to your first treatment an initial consultation is important to ensure you are suitable for treatment. As no two clients are alike, the results can vary. Fair skinned clients with dark hair will definitely see the best results, and the fastest results. Those with darker skins can still be treated but the treatment energy has to be kept lower due to the risk of skin burns so it may take a few extra treatments to get the same results. This will all be discussed at consultation. The treatment offers permanent hair reduction of around 85%. No one can guarantee 100% permanent hair removal and should not, as hormonal fluctuations throughout our lifetime can cause regrowth. You should however see a massive reduction of hair growth after 6 treatments, usually you will need to have the odd top up treatment, once or twice a year is average. Of courses there is no doubt we have had  clients that have had fantastic results after only three or four treatments but it is best to assume you will need to have at least six treatments.

There are 3 different stages of hair growth:

    • Anagen – growing stage
    • Catagen – transition stage
    • Telogen – resting stage

When we treat an area all hair growth stages are targeted however only hair in the anagen stage can be treated successfully as this is where the hair is attached to the follicle. The hairs can be in any of these three stages at any one time. The number of hairs in the anagen phase at any one time varies from 10-70% depending on the body site. This is why repeated treatments are necessary, which will depend on the area being treated. The length and timing of the growth cycles are affected by numerous factors such as body site, hair density, thickness, ethnic origin, hormonal status and age.

The most common treatment areas in woman are the legs, bikini line, underarm and face, whereas in men the back, chest and beard area are most common, however the laser is safe to use on most areas of the body so no matter what your area of concern is please ask our team who will be happy to advise you.

This type of hair removal is popular for many reasons, improved appearance and more importantly leaving painful hair removal methods behind. If you suffer from ingrown hairs this treatment will make a great difference to you.

Timing is everything and as staying out of the sun is important whilst having laser hair removal, this is the perfect time of year to start your treatment. The treatments are six weeks apart for body hair and four weeks apart for facial hair. So by the time summer comes around and you are ready to hit the beach you will be well into your course of treatments and will already be seeing great results.

Just a few precautions following treatment to be aware of:

For 48 hours following treatment, avoid all heat treatments such as excessive exercise, swimming hot baths or showers, steam rooms and saunas. Also avoid perfumes, aftershaves and deoderants.

If the cost of the treatment is a concern for you we can offer a payment plan for you to help spread the cost. We also offer a free consultation and at the minute 20% off your first treatment. If you have been considering this for a while, why not kick start 2017 and do something for yourself. You won’t regret it.

For those who do not have the dark, coarse hair required for laser hair removal we do offer alternative solutions such as electrolysis which is also very effective. If you would like any more information on electrolysis or are confused as to which method is for you please give one of the team a call and we will be happy to advise.
