Have you noticed uneven skin tone, or dark brown spots on your face. The main reason for this is due to over exposure to the sun. The melanin that gives skin its colour gets stimulated by UVA causing the skin to react with dark patches, sun spots or pigmentation as its better known. Other factors play a part such as acne or hormonal skin. Some medications such as the contraceptive pill and Hormonal Replacement Therapy can cause photo sensitivity and highlight pigmentation once exposed to the sun.
Sun Exposure – Prevention is better than cure:
- Avoid the sun during peak hours between 11am – 3pm
- Avoid sunbeds
- Cover your skin with clothing
- Use a broad spectrum sunscreen
- Reapply sunscreen after exercising or swimming
Pigmentation Removal/ Brightening Options:
Chemical Peels are used to improve the skins appearance, minimise pore size, improve acne scarring, fine lines, sunspots, and rough skin, they are designed to exfoliate your skin and encourage it to renew itself by creating fresh new skin cells. The depth of the peel will depend on the objective and condition of the skin. Mesoestetic chemical peels typically used include glycolic acid, mandelic acid salicylic acid, lactic acid or combined liquid peels. The different types of chemicals cause a controlled injury, each penetrating through to a different skin depth, then peeling away to reveal a new layer of skin.
Photo rejuvenation uses laser technology to target pigmented cells. When cells containing a lot of melanin or haemoglobin are treated, the target heats up and is destroyed within a few thousandths of a second. In addition to removing pigmentation this treatment increases collagen production for a more youthful complexion. Typically, three treatments are recommended at four weekly intervals, a suitable treatment plan should be discussed with you at an initial consultation. Photo rejuvenation is also very effective in the improvement of acne scarring.
