Indian Head Massage

People often consider a massage to be a treat, maybe something they will have on their birthday or as a special gift.  Sometimes we only go when we feel our muscles are very tight, but in reality, however, a massage should be a more regular occurrence to prevent our muscles becoming so tight and to relieve tensions that can result in regular headaches and migraines.

If we treat a massage as a preventative measure, we can prevent our bodies becoming as knotted and as stressed.  An Indian Head Massage is a great way to sooth and eliminate stresses and tensions and help to improve our general well-being.

What is an Indian Head Massage?

This ancient Indian therapy is based on acupressure massage and is derived from the Ayurvedic tradition that focuses on the head, neck, shoulders and face. It is a deep style of massage that can provide instant relief from tension, stress, headaches, migraines, insomnia, fatigue, sinusitis and general well-being. The treatment is safe and helps induce a state of calm and promote concentration.

The massage works to release any blocked negative energy in the body by applying pressure to certain points on the neck, shoulders and head that correspond to each Chakra, or energy centre. This pressure unblocks the Chakras and allows for a free flow of energy around the body.

An Indian Head Massage can reach all energy centres where tension builds and help release blockages, restoring the individual to optimum health and feelings of wellbeing.  Many clients experience a deeply calming and relaxing, state and feel revitalised and more able to concentrate.

What happens during an Indian Head Massage?

The aim of an Indian Head Massage is to release the stress and tension that has built up in the tissues, muscles and joints of the head, face, neck and shoulders.  During the session a therapist will combine soothing massage with deep massage on particular pressure points to relax and loosen the muscles.

Using a range of different massage pressures and rhythms helps to stimulate the pressure points.  Working on specific pressure points on the shoulders and neck helps to release stress and tension, alleviate headaches and improve the flow of fluid in the spine.  Working on pressure points on the head can also help to promote a state of calm, reviving the body, increasing circulation and even promoting healthy hair growth.

Your therapist will also gently massage the face to aid circulation, improve skin tone and reduce sinus and headache problems.  The treatment can be tailored to your needs and is usually performed with the client sitting.  A light scented oil can be used to aid the massage and promote a sense of calm in the room.

What are the benefits of an Indian Head Massage?

There are an abundance of benefits to having an Indian Head Massage.  As well as relieving stress and tension, an Indian Head Massage can release knots of muscular tension, alleviate headaches and migraines, ease eyestrain and restore joint mobility and flexibility in the neck and shoulders.

It can also improve blood circulation, boost cerebral spinal fluid circulation and stimulate lymphatic drainage to rid the body of toxins.  Other benefits include improved sleep, improved concentration, renewed energy levels and a general feeling of well-being.

Is an Indian Head Massage painful?

An Indian Head Massage is a non-invasive complementary massage that can be deeply soothing and relaxing.  Although a therapist will apply deep pressure to specific points, the pressure is tailored to your needs.  In rare cases you can temporarily feel a little worse before feeling the true benefits while your body is releasing toxins and impurities.  An Indian Head Massage offers many benefits and most people feel re-energised and much more relaxed following the treatment.

How many sessions do you require?

Some people look at having a massage as a treat but an Indian Head Massage can be a great way to keep stress at bay, and more regular sessions will help with maintaining a relaxed state. A person may need more than one treatment session to feel the full benefits as their muscles have become so tight.

What can I expect after an Indian Head Massage?

Immediately after the treatment most clients feel very relaxed and soothed, and although everyone is different, many will experience better sleep and better energy levels straight away.  As the massage works to release knots and blockages, it allows people to feel loosened up and free from headaches.

Many clients will experience increased energy, clarity and alertness straight away. Rarely though, as the massage releases toxins stored in the body, a person may not experience all the benefits until these impurities are flushed out. Having regular Indian Head Massages will allow you to keep toxins at bay and maintain a healthier more relaxed state.

The origins of Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage have been practised in India for centuries and has been passed on from generations.  Traditionally Indian women would offer a massage to their daughters but the techniques were limited to the head to promote a healthy scalp and hair.  As time went on, techniques began to incorporate the shoulder, neck and face for cleansing, relaxation and medical purposes as it is believed that these areas have important energy centres, or chakras, which can benefit the whole body when treated.

This treatment can be carried out while you are seated in a chair fully clothed.
